ABOUT THE TERRAINS CONCERTS
Curated by JOLT artistic director/producer James Hullick and prominent musician and sound artist Adam Simmons, Terrains is series of four concerts in the month of May 2011, celebrating the high standards and broad scope of the Melbourne sonic art scene. 'Terrain' comes from the Latin word terrenus meaning 'of the earth'. 'Terrain' denotes geographic areas, the physical features of a tract of land, and is also used to describe a field of knowledge. Thematically speaking, acts such as The Siswara Quartet (a contemporary Australian Balinese gamelan ensemble) and the sonically static solo performance of Adam Simmons do explore the notion of the sonic terrain of geographical places, the majority of the acts presented are more concerned with the notion of a sonic terrain being a field of auditory knowledge and experience. Cutting edge contemporary vocalist Carolyn Connors will explore those more internal expressionist terrains associated with the more animalistic vocalisations that the human voice can make. The brash arty trio Golden Fur will demonstrate the hungry visceral nature of sonic exploration in the more unchartered auditory fields of experience.
