Oren Ambarchi (Australian): Electronics/Guitars
Oren Ambarchi’s works are hesitant and tense extended song forms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive song-writing; the deceptive simplicity and temporal suspensions of composers such as Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier; and the physicality of rock music, slowed down and?stripped back to its bare bones, abstracted and replaced with pure signal.
Ambarchi has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists. Local collaborators include Jon Rose, Jim Denley, Marco Fusinato, Robin Fox, Anthony Pateras, Carolyn Connors, David Shea, Philip Samartzis, Paul Gough (Pimmon) and James Rushford among others. Together with Robbie Avenaim, Ambarchi co-curated the What Is Music? festival – Australia’s premier annual showcase of local and international experimental music – for over ten years.
Recent notable appearances include the 2010 Sydney Biennale (Jun-Aug), Vivid Festival Sydney (Jun 2010), MONA FOMA festival Tasmania (Jan 2010), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (May 2009), Melbourne International Arts Festival (Oct 2009). Oren has co-produced an Australian television series on experimental music called Subsonics, and co-curated the Toff in Town Sonic Art Series.
