CORTEX was born in 1998 and arose out of Alex and Daniel Buess’ numerous previous musical collaborations. Both musicians played in the legendary free-noise-core combo 16-17, and Alex and Daniel had also worked together for many years realizing Alex Buess’ compositions for percussion. After the 16-17 Mechanophobia-Tour in 1998, Buess & Buess started work on their duo CORTEX, which became a melting point of Buess & Buess’ common interests in physical/human-and virtual/machine energy. It is the dynamism of their exploration of this energy that propels CORTEX forward: it’s hormonal; it’s organic and magnetic skins; it’s air and metal. CORTEX present their high powered performances in a wide range of venues: the George Enescu Concert Hall in Bucarest; a church in Lucerne; a auto workshop in Basel. Some recent live shows, have included bass-player Daniel Sailer (Krakatau, Plutonium Transport) and sax-player Antoine Chessex (Monno) to create help drive a powerful mix of bass, harsh sax-attacks and unforgiving percussive force toward an overwhelming wall of sound with extreme frequencies and heavy beats. For the Terrains Festival Cortex will be working with acclaimed media artist Stelarc and sound artist Damian Bennett.
