AMPLIFIED ELEPHANTS / BOLT ENSEMBLE
Saturday 21 May, 7:30pm. Footscray Community Arts Centre, 45 Moreland Street Footscray. Tix: $8/$12
BOLT Ensemble is a chamber orchestra dedicated to performing sonic projects directed and (usually) composed by James Hullick. The line-up of the ensemble features some of Melbourne’s most engaging musicians: Belinda Woods (flute), Peter Neville (percussion), Anita Hustas (double bass) to name a few. www.boltensemble.org
What they will play for JOLT: BOLT will perform a new work for chamber orchestra that will feature James Hullick on prepared piano and voice, titled The RE: Vivisection, which is a surreal abstract sonic experience without narrative. Other works by Hullick will be performed by the group, notably the first composition in Hullick’s Vivisection series titled Vivisection 1 (1998) for flute and performed by Belinda Woods.

Amplified Elephants are a sound art ensemble comprising of artists with an intellectual disability. The group develops works with composer and JOLT artistic director James Hullick. In 2010 they took part in The Click Clack Project, where they were mentored by the BOLT Ensemble. Through Click Clack, the Elephants performed several works both in combination with the BOLT Ensemble and the Noise Scavengers (teen sound artists from Northern Geelong), and separately to these other acts as well. www.clickclackproject.org
What they will play for JOLT: For this show the Amplified Elephants will perform works with the BOLT Ensemble. These works are from the show The Mountain (2010), which was the final event in The Click Clack Project’s 2010 calendar. The Mountain sonically expressed an abstract response to the life an times of Milarepa, a sorcerer who ultimately found enlightenment as a Buddhist saint.
